Drugs including Cannabis and ‘Ice’ Uncovered from Detection at Woodlands Checkpoint
Why it matters: This news highlights the severe penalties for drug smuggling in Singapore, including the death penalty for large quantities. It serves as a stark warning to travelers and residents about the dangers of drug trafficking.

On the evening of 14 April 2026, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers at Woodlands Checkpoint directed a Malaysia-registered car for enhanced checks. During these checks, officers uncovered two plastic bags in the car boot believed to contain controlled drugs.

The driver was identified as a 23-year-old Malaysian man who was arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs. The seized items included approximately 5,127g of cannabis and 2,072g of 'Ice' (methamphetamine).

Following the detection at the checkpoint, Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers were immediately alerted and conducted further checks. Through follow-up investigations on the same day, CNB officers launched an operation in the vicinity of Woodlands Industrial Park. This led to the arrest of two Bangladeshi men, aged 42 and 36, for suspected drug offences.

A total of about 5,127g of cannabis and 2,072g of 'Ice' were seized from the two plastic bags. The drugs have an estimated worth of more than $547,000. Officials noted that this quantity could potentially feed the addiction of about 1,900 abusers for a week.

Investigations into the case are ongoing. Under Section 7 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, individuals who import into or export from Singapore more than 250g of methamphetamine, or more than 500g of cannabis, may face the death penalty.

ICA and CNB have stated they will continue to work closely to prevent attempts to smuggle drugs across borders. ICA is also committed to conducting security checks at checkpoints to prevent smuggling of undesirable persons, weapons, explosives, and other contraband.
